This event features a screening of six independent short films spanning vastly different styles and genres, using the moving image to spark conversations about migration and Hong Kong. Through these creative lenses, we peer into the secrets of an underground doctor from a fly’s perspective; ride the London Underground in pursuit of the taste of iced lemon tea; observe how Hong Kong Muslim women and Hongkongers in the UK break free from confined spaces; and contemplate memories while stepping out of the shadows amidst long British nights and the melodies of a band.

I Miss My Friends by 706younglings (10m)

Scott, a recent immigrant from Hong Kong to the UK, finds himself separated from the close friends who once shaped his everyday life. He quietly struggles with loneliness, distance, and the unfamiliar rhythms of a new country. As he attempts to settle into life in Britain, Scott must learn how to live with absence and whether a sense of belonging can be rebuilt far from home.

The Fly by Wilson Tam (14m)

The Fly

The Fly, is a thriller set in Chinatown where Chan, an underground surgeon operating at the back of his Chinese restaurant, resorts to desperate measures to repay his debt to the triads.

The Buraq that can’t fly 不會飛的鳳凰 by Zeed (14m)

A visual poetry on a muslim mother who captures her child through pivotal moments throughout the child’s life events as an immigrant in Hong Kong.Inspired from Zeed’s childhood and his mother.

Director’s statement:

When I was a child in Hong Kong, my mother and I navigated Hong Kong beneath these neon signs, her gentle voice weaving tales of dreams reflecting her own—these memories planted the seed for this film. In the Buraq That Can’t Fly, I recreate that world through my story. The family’s journey is captured through Ayesha’s home video camera, a device she uses as a creative outlet. Her footage becomes more than memories. At its heart, this film is an ode to my mother’s stories and the resilient hope she gifted me. This film taught me that true flight isn’t about strength; it’s about permission. Permission to believe in the impossible.

Playground by Carrie Shen (22m)

On the eve of her departure from the UK, rebellious and unpredictable Mavis pulls Cassie into one last night of chaos—teaching her how to steal, sharing a chilling secret, and leaving behind a song that lingers long after she’s gone. With Mavis’ exit, their all-girl band faces an inevitable end, leaving Cassie struggling to make sense of her reckless thrill-seeking and cryptic farewell. As she wrestles with the weight of their fractured friendship, she’s left with a choice: to dig up Mavis’ past or let it stay buried.

Where Are They Now by Jevon Tse (5m)

Director’s statement: A once-in-ten-thousand-years long solar eclipse is finally coming to an end. Before daylight returns, streetlight maintenance worker Ah Fung must replace the city’s smart streetlight bulbs with normal ones. Yet after living so long under the Black Sun, he fears the return of daylight — and struggles to say goodbye to the only bulb that ever listened to his thoughts.

This film was inspired by my feelings when I first arrived in the UK — the long nights, damp weather, and the sense of distance between people.

Travelling on the Night Tube, Thinking about Iced Lemon Tea, Less Sugar 徹夜難眠,想起凍檸茶少甜 by Michael Mui 梅廷徽 (13m)

On a quiet London night, a boy and a girl from Hong Kong meet by chance and travel together on the night tube.

She says she is searching for iced lemon tea with less sugar. And he doesn’t ask why.

As the train glides through the sleeping city, their conversation wanders between memories and losses.

When they arrive at Heathrow Airport, there is only one question that remains:

 “Where are we going next?”

Director’s statement:

This film began with a simple craving: a glass of iced lemon tea, less sugar, a sweet and sour taste that belongs to home, yet somehow follows you wherever you go.

As a filmmaker from Hong Kong living between cities, I’ve often found myself searching for something familiar in unfamiliar places. This story was born from that quiet sense of dislocation: a city that never quite becomes yours, and a memory you can’t seem to put down.

The film follows two people, both from Hong Kong, who meet by chance in a foreign city. It’s a brief encounter, but one that captures the tenderness and weight of living between places.
